Lincoln native Audrey Nance is Civic Nebraska’s Capitol Experience Day Coordinator. The Lincoln High and Arts and Humanities Focus Program alumna began her duties Sept. 19.

In her new role, Audrey is a resource for teachers and community partners across Nebraska to enhance civics education opportunities for students and constituents through our Capitol Experience Day program.

“A thriving and robust democracy is one that is accessible and responsive to all its constituents, and I look forward to expanding that access through the fundamental civics education that is Capitol Experience Days,” Audrey said. “Everyone can and should be equipped with the knowledge and skills to make their voices heard in our local government and beyond.”

Capitol Experience Day teaches critical thinking, civil discourse, and the governing process through an interactive lineup of a state legislator, executive branch official, and Supreme Court justice. Students also engage in a mock committee hearing, in which they deliberate a piece of current legislation of their choice.

By the end of the day, students have a greater understanding of Nebraska’s state government and their role as citizens in the state’s legislative process.

Audrey comes to Civic Nebraska from Friendship Home in Lincoln, where she focused on child advocacy and ultimately became the lead children’s advocate at the organization. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska with double majors in journalism and history and minors in political science and ethnic studies.

After graduation, Audrey was an after-school club instructor at the Goodrich Middle School Community Learning Center, followed by her work as an all-ages teacher at Dimensions Educational Research Foundation, a nature-based childcare center that emphasizes experiential learning and environmental stewardship.

Outside of work, Audrey spends her free time taking nature walks with her partner and her big sweet dog, Jayne; going to the lake with friends; gardening and houseplants; watching science fiction and fantasy, and doing arts and crafts. Halloween is her favorite holiday and she loves dressing up in costume.

We’re excited to have Audrey at Civic Nebraska. Join us in welcoming her – she’s at audrey.nance@civicnebraska.org.
