Let’s win one for accessibility and transparency

A critical component of a robust democracy is the public’s civic engagement, and LB254 would make that engagement much more convenient.

LB254 is coming up for debate at the Nebraska Legislature. This bill would develop and maintain a publicly accessible, digital internet archive of closed-captioned video of the proceedings at the statehouse. Introduced by State Sen. Tom Brewer, it would give Nebraskans the ability to watch legislative proceedings at their convenience.

Civic Nebraska supports LB254, which would be implemented in the 2025 legislative session. A critical component of a robust democracy is the public’s civic engagement, and we believe government entities have a responsibility to make that engagement as convenient as possible.

Please join us in encouraging senators to advance LB254. If you need a refresher, here’s our full testimony from earlier in the session spelling out why we believe this bill should become law. Here’s a key excerpt:

We see this bill as providing a very important means for people to engage with their Legislature while recognizing that even those who are very interested in what happens here have busy lives that prevent them from watching live or being here in person.

Find your state senator here and send them a note in support today. And, thanks for all that you do as Nebraska’s “Second House.” Let’s get LB254 across the finish line!

Thanks for all that you do,

– Your friends and neighbors at Civic Nebraska
