A note from our executive director:
It is hard to believe it is in the end of the year already! The 30 full and part-time staff at Nebraskans for Civic Reform have worked hard to create a more modern and robust democracy for all Nebraskans in 2015. While 2014 was a year of rapid expansion with the addition of 20 staff, this year we had more measured growth in all program areas and worked to expand and ensure our programs were operating at their highest quality. Here are just a few of the highlights:
- Implementation of online voter registration in Nebraska after seven years of advocacy
- Served nearly 2000 Nebraska youth who experienced our leadership and service learning programs
- Publication of the first ever Nebraska Civic Health Index and launch of the Civic Health Initiative
- Expansion of the Rural Civic Action Program from Lincoln to Kearney and rural communities
- Bi-partisan (12 Republicans, 12 Democrats, 1 Independent) defeat of Voter ID legislation
- Launch of the Know Your (Voting) Rights campaign in advance of the 2016 election
As we expand our youth engagement programs into more communities, classrooms, and after school programs, continued program support and funding is critical.
In addition, with the 2016 elections just around the corner, our non-partisan election protection program is kicking into full gear. We intend to double the amount of non-partisan election observers from 60 to 120 and double the amount of communities we observe from 3 to 6 to ensure that Nebraskans’ right to vote is not infringed as they were in North and South Omaha in 2012.
