On the chopping block: Election Assistance Commission

by

This morning voting rights organizations got word that a proposal was before the Committee on House Administration to eliminate the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. H.R. 634, the Election Assistance Commission Termination Act, is aptly named – proposing to eliminate the commission created to ensure that the problems that plagued the 2000 election never happen again.

Well, that was short lived.

Our own Nebraska native, Representative Adrian Smith, serves on the committee set to vote on the proposal Tuesday, Feb. 7th, at 12pmET. And he needs to hear from you.

Contact Rep. Adrian Smith at his Washington D.C. office and, if you’re a resident of the 3rd congressional district, give one of his district offices a call or visit.

Why we need the Election Assistance Commission:

  • Election Assistance Commission is crucial to ensuring that elections in Nebraska serve and protect every voter
  • Created in the wake of the controversial 2000 election, the EAC is a vital resource for state and local election administrators, conducting research, evaluating accessibility of new election technology, and standardizing election administration across the country
  • We need to reaffirm our commitment to fair and accessible elections, not terminate the federal agency that ensures these protections
Tell Rep. Adrian Smith that Nebraskans want fair and accessible elections, tell him to oppose H.R. 634
