Speak up and be heard: We’ll show you how

On June 20, Collective Impact Lincoln will share how to navigate local power structures – preparing public comments, testifying at forums, and contacting officials.

Between record-setting primary participation and peaceful protests, 2020 has been a year of surging civic energy. Activism is deeply rooted in the history of our city, country, and state, and this spring, more and more Nebraskans have built upon this tradition through their votes, words, and positive deeds.

Political participation is a sign of civic health, and it’s a fundamental community building block. That’s why Collective Impact Lincoln is hosting its latest Community Builder Workshop on Saturday with this advocacy and activism in mind.

This virtual workshop – register for the Zoom session here – starts at 10 am on June 20. It will focus on speaking out and making your voice heard on the issues affecting you, your neighborhood, and our greater communities. Collective Impact Lincoln’s community organizers will share how to prepare public comments, the process for testifying at forums such as the local city council, and also how to identify and contact city officials. Space is limited to 15 participants, so sign up now to secure your spot.

This Community Builder Workshop is an opportunity to ensure resident voices are being heard and to connect with public power structures. These are the concrete ways for resident-led change to happen – testifying at the council or the Legislature, writing to your council member, or simply to have an understanding of how all of these processes and systems work.

We’ll also set aside time Saturday for participants to prepare public comments for a June 29 open comment session before the Lincoln City Council. “Community Builders” can work on shaping a message to share with council members on any issue. Then, Collective Impact Lincoln will encourage workshop participants to share the information with friends and family who may be interested in testifying at a future open-comment session of an elected body.

Now is the time to speak up! We’re looking forward to seeing you this Saturday morning for a festive and informative Community Builder Workshop.

Thanks for all that you do,

Nancy Petitto
