Volunteer Spotlight: Darlene Mason

by

It’s National Volunteer Week and we’re highlighting some of the incredible volunteers that make Civic Nebraska possible. Read their story and learn more about how your can get involved.

Darlene Mason has inspired all of us at Civic Nebraska to continue fighting to pass legislation to eliminate the two-year waiting period required for returning citizens to vote. As someone with a prior felony conviction, Darlene was eager to share her story in an effort to give a voice to the 7,000 Nebraskans disenfranchised by our current law.

Darlene reached out to Civic Nebraska after reading a news article about our work on LB 75. She was ready and willing to join the fight! Since then, Darlene has driven from York, NE to testify before the Government, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee in support of LB 75. Her moving and emotional testimony helped get the votes needed to advance the bill to the floor. This same testimony was later read by Senator Justin Wayne during legislative debate, where LB 75 again received the necessary votes to advance.

LB 75 is scheduled for Final Reading on Monday, April 24th. Without Darlene, and other dedicated advocates like her, we never could have made it this far. Please do your part by contacting your senator today. Over 7,000 people right here in our communities are counting on you!
