Meet Mary Boland Steier, director of finance

Mary Boland Steier of Omaha, an attorney, business manager, mother of five, and community advocate, is Civic Nebraska’s new director of finance.

Mary Boland Steier of Omaha, an attorney, business manager, mother of five, and community advocate, is Civic Nebraska’s new director of finance. She began her duties Oct. 8.

As Civic Nebraska’s chief financial officer, Mary works among Civic Nebraska’s senior administrative team and plays a key role in conducting financial analysis for the organization. She maintains Civic Nebraska’s financial processes and forecasts financial statuses, builds and updates program budgets, leads the creation of the annual budget, builds quarterly board reports, and is in charge of all other financial matters.

From 1997-2018, Mary was the chief financial and operations officer of The Steier Group Inc., a national consulting firm focused on capital campaign project management for nonprofits, churches, and schools. A native of Moline, Illinois, She earned an undergraduate degree in social work from Creighton University and a law degree from Creighton Law. Mary is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association.

“I enjoy working in diverse and challenging environments, and so this is a perfect fit. It is an exciting time for Civic Nebraska,” Mary says. “I’m looking forward to being involved in our organization and its important work, and I’m pleased to have a lead role in guiding our growth and capacity.”  

Mary volunteers with Do Space, RISE Prison Reentry, Mount Michael Benedictine High School, Creighton Preparatory School, Heart Ministry Center, Bread for the World, St. Wenceslaus’ Micah Ministry, Human Needs and Catholic Social Teaching ministries, Jesuit Academy Partner’s Board and RePlant Woodcliff. She also is on the board of the League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha.

Mary has five sons – Jimmy, Mick, Tommy, Charlie, and Bereket – and two 12-year-old dogs, Buttons and Buckle. In her spare time, Mary enjoys reading, walking, traveling, and watching Creighton Bluejays baseball, for whom Tommy is a pitcher.
