Strengthening Democracy Award Winner-Judge Riko Bishop

by

Judge Riko Bishop is one of six judges that serve on the Nebraska Court of Appeals.  She was appointed to this position in 2013, but previously served as a law clerk for the Court of Appeals before she joined the law firm Perry, Guthrery, Haase, & Gessford.  Even before her distinguished law career began, Judge Bishop taught junior high English in the public school system, including Bellevue and Elkhorn, for 7 years.  It is this experience that makes her such a fantastic speaker to represent the role of the judicial branch to our Capitol Experience Day students.

Judge Bishop regularly provides a 30-minute overview of the court system in Nebraska, as well as provides the students with a hypothetical case that engages them in a critical thinking exercise.  High school students from Lincoln, Omaha, and beyond have all benefitted from her judicial and teaching expertise, helping them to better understand the judicial branch and a potential career option.  We appreciate the time Judge Bishop has devoted to improving our state’s civic health through her commitment to our Capitol Experience Day program.
